What Makes Texas Hold’em Different?

You can lump Texas Hold’em poker with other forms of gambling but it’s not really the same is it? Anyone who has tried enough games will recognise that there is more to this poker variant than meets the eye. In this post, I’m going to highlight some big differences between poker and the other casino games. I hope it will provide some insight and give you reason to pursue this amazing game.

More Player Input
Most casino games follow a similar theme in that there is less freedom or control from the player. Texas Hold’em is wildly different in that respect. Players have a lot more power. You get to choose the hands you play and the bets you make. This level of control is practically non-existent in casino games like slots. Whether you want to play like a rock and only play aces or a creative LAG poker style, the power is in your hands in Texas Hold’em.

No Limit to the Betting

The vast majority of casino games are fixed limit. This is not the case in most poker games. No limit is by far the more popular way of playing. The main event of World Series of Poker is no limit Texas Hold’em and this betting format is far and away the most common. That means you can bet all your tournament chips or cash at the table on any one hand. Texas Hold’em is not for the faint hearted as you could be all in anytime so take advantage of poker tips!

It’s Complex

The online casino games are pretty simple to play. The rules are not hard and with very little study you could understand relevant strategy. Texas Hold’em is not quite a straight forward. Its complexity lies in the different aspects that must be mastered. A good poker player needs to have the attributes below:

  1. Mental toughness
  2. Bankroll management skills
  3. Appreciation of maths and odds
  4. Patience
  5. Awareness of table image
  6. Good table selection
  7. Ability to bluff
  8. Conviction in reads

Against Other Players

Finally, Texas Hold’em is also different due to your opponents. Practically all other casino games see you facing off against the house. In Texas Hold’em your opponents are real people. This is the case whether you’re playing heads up, 6 max or full ring games. The house makes money through rake or charging a fee on top of a tournament buy-in, they don’t hold a statistical edge on  you like in roulette or slots. If you want to win at poker, you need to be better than your opponents – in the long run anyway.
